What is Orthodoxy?

The term Eastern Orthodox describes a large group of sister churches that originated from the work of Jesus Christ and his apostles in the eastern Mediterranean lands and the ancient patriarchates of Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch, and Jerusalem.  The missionary work of these first believers has led to the spread of Eastern Orthodoxy from the Holy Land to every continent.

At first, Orthodox services in the United States tended to reflect the language and origins of immigrants and their homelands.  Presently, more Orthodox churches are using English for their worship services.  St. Thekla's congregation is one of these churches.  As a result, Orthodoxy is being disovered and is experiencing rapid growth.  This growth is due to its fidelity to the Scriptures, apostolic traditions, and its unchanged historic style of worship.  The Orthodox Church in the United States is gaining a multitude of converts who find the Scripture-based theology and the Christian worship of the third century to be a comfort in the present day.
